Exploring Depth of Field
What are the three ways to manipulate Depth of Field?
Manipulating the Iris, focal length, and Camera-to-object distance changes the depth of field.
Click on Iris and DOF. Click on all of the F-Stops and compare the pictures and the illustration of the depth of field, explain in your own words how the images change.
As the iris opens, the depth of field becomes greater and more things are in focus. As the iris closes, the depth of field becomes smaller and less things are in focus.
If you use a camera lens with a shorter focal length, will it create more or less depth of field?
If the focal length is shorter, the depth of field will be greater. If the focal length is longer, the depth of field will be shorter.
If you move the camera closer to the subject, will that increase or decrease the depth of field?
As the camera gets closer to a person or object, the depth of field becomes shallower. As the camera moves away from a person or object, the depth of field becomes greater.
What are the three settings to create expansive or great Depth of Field?
Using a greater camera to object distance, a shorter focal length, and a small iris opening can create an expansive depth of field.
What are the three settings to create shallow depth of field?
Using a shorter camera to object distance, a longer focal length, and a large iris opening can create a shallow depth of field.

Shallow Depth of Field
In a picture with a shallow depth of field, one specific area of the photograph is in focus. It's created by using a short camera-to-object distance, a long focal length, and a large iris opening. Usually the subject will be in focus while the background is out of focus.
Expansive Depth of Field
In a picture with an expansive depth of field, everything will be in focus. It's created by using a long camera-to-object distance, a short focal length, and a small iris opening. Both the subject and the background will be in focus.
